Add an expense and split it
Updated Jun 3, 2026
Once your group is set up, adding an expense takes about ten seconds. FairJar records every amount in integer cents so there are no rounding errors, no matter how you split.
Open the expense form
- Open your group and tap Add expense.
- Enter a description (e.g. “Pizza night” or “Monthly rent”).
- Enter the amount and choose the currency. If the expense is in a different currency than the group’s base currency, FairJar converts it automatically — see Add expenses in any currency.
- Choose who paid from the list of group members.
Choose a split mode
FairJar supports three ways to divide the cost:
Equal — the default. The total is divided evenly across all members (or a subset you select). FairJar handles any uneven cents automatically.
Custom (exact amounts) — you type the exact amount each person owes. The amounts must add up to the total before you can save.
Percentage — you enter a percentage for each person. The percentages must sum to 100%.
Select the mode that matches how your group agreed to share the cost, then adjust the member list if not everyone is included.
Save and review
- Tap Save expense.
- The expense appears in the group’s history list.
- Balances update immediately — tap Balances to see who owes whom.
Recurring expenses
For costs that repeat on a schedule (rent, a monthly subscription, utilities), enable the Recurring toggle before saving. FairJar will remind the group when the next occurrence is due, so you never have to re-enter the same expense manually.
Exporting your history
Need a record for a shared spreadsheet? Tap Export CSV in the expense history to download all entries as a plain-text file you can open in any spreadsheet app.
